"The Black Prince at Crecy" (1888), oil on canvas, 135 x 205"
Julian Russell Story (1857-1919)

This painting, the largest in the Telfair's collection, portrays a dramatic episode in the Hundred Years' War between England and France: the aftermath of the pivotal Battle of Crecy of 1346. Prince Edward of England, known as the Black Prince, solemnly gazes at his fallen adversary, King John of Bohemia, who braved the dangers of battle despite his blindness. This historic moment, as imagined by Julian Russell Story, merges enemies and friends, victory and defeat, war and compassion.
