"Early Spring in Holland" (ca. 1887-1905), oil on canvas, 35 7/8" x 51 1/8"
|
George Hitchcock (1850-1913)
George Hitchcock and fellow American artist Gari Melchers set up a studio together in rural Holland. Hitchcock so loved to
paint outdoors that he became known as the "painter of sunlight." He was likely influenced by the French impressionist Claude
Monet, who also chose to portray his subjects at a specific time of day within a specific season, allowing the emotion and
impression of a moment to define the piece.
